What it does

Every patent is filed under classification codes. Two systems matter most: the international IPC and the CPC used by the European and US patent offices. Patent Classification Explorer lets you browse both, switch between them for the same code, and see in a Diff view where CPC goes deeper than IPC.

It covers 254,249 CPC codes, 80,145 IPC codes and 21,361 catchwords. Filing data from PATSTAT adds 82 million patent applications from 38 countries, filed between 2013 and 2023.

Patent Universe

The Patent Universe zoomed into section H: each subclass is a burst of orange points, one per CPC code, and a tooltip names class H04, electric communication technique

The Universe shows every CPC code as a point of light, clustered by section, class and subclass. Pan and zoom, fly to a section, switch to IPC for the smaller system or to Diff for the codes only CPC has.
